The low penetration of computerized provider order entry (CPOE) is because it's fairly expensive.
Last time when I was an inpatient and they gave me any medication, they swiped the bar code on my wristband. Then, they verified my name and a picture; with three chances to catch an error they should have been very sure it was me. All the drugs were in individual dose packets and they scanned their barcode to make sure that was what I was supposed to get. The last step in the process was to hand me a pill cup and a glass of water.... with the horse pills I take it sometimes requires more than one glass of water.
