People know that eating poorly and not exercising over time will cause health problems. While education is important, there needs to be more steps on a larger level. Food companies need to make their products healthier and their packaging more sustainable. It's their responsibility to the consumer. That doesn't take personal responsbility out of the equation, however. Health foods are expensive and that we live in a society of overconsumption.

Diabetes research is an important issue to me, as several close family members live with Type 1 diabetes since a young age. More attention needs to be paid to Type 1 diabetes and finding a cure through stem cell research.

There should be more research into the correlation of type II diabetes and the pervasive introdution of high fructose sweetners, and other genetically altered corn additives into the food chain. Watch the documentary, "King Corn," you can get it from Netflex. It'll give you a clue.

As and RN for 37 years I have found the level of personal responsibility astonishing and frustrating. Maybe if these people had to pay for thier supplies and be bound to an exercise and diet controlled group in order to continue thier meds they might just work a little harder themselves. Information about type II Diabetes has been around a long time. When they act suprised when you tell them that thier weight and diet are killing them I want to puke. There is a lot of provable research about glycemic index meal planniing that would help in instruction. But for everyones sake the responsibility is on the patient. I asked (this is done many times) a man who had surgery and hi blood sugar was around 50 - normal is 110 - what his blood sugars had been at home. He said "all right". When I asked how many times a day he checks he had to admit that he never got a meter and does not check form one MD visit to another. That really makes me angry. Now he takes up a valuanle bed and has complications after surgery because of his behavior.
