This is a very devistating disease which is passed on through generations. It is so hard for the person living with it and the people and family that have to help care for them. After living with diabetes for 42 years my husband has had all the minor and major complications of diabetes. Stem cell reasearch must be given a big push.
Diabetes is a devistating disease. My husband had type 1 from the age of 16 and passed away from coronary disease that came as a result of diabetes at the age of 48. My oldest daughter become diabetic at the age of 24. She is already suffering from some major complications, after 5 years. As a result of her diabetic condition, she cannot hold down a job. She is uninsured and cannot afford to see doctors when necessary. At times, she cannot buy her insulin, never mind the expense of test strips. I am all for a better system which will cover the uninsured (medicade gave her a runaround and then turned her down). And I am definitely for stem cell research as a possible cure. From what I have read, the stem cells do not have to be from an embryo - which was the major objection from some people. Anyone who has lived with someone with diabetes,or has the disease, knows how difficult controlling it can be - especially if it is brittle. Its time to do something to help!
My opinion is we will always have to pay lots of money for health care until more is done regarding preventive. I do agree that a lot of diabetes is genetic, especially those born with it. I still think a healthy, mostly alkaline, organic diet of fruits and vegies, minimum red meat, chicken, eggs and only cold water seafood, legumes, grains, free of pesticides, gluten free for those with allergies, and unprocessed foods should be eaten. Stop consuming sodas and drink lots of purified water to flush out the toxins in your body. Avoid foods one is allergic to, which could be dairy, gluten products are common. Learn to read labels. Only a few aisles are worth visiting in most grocery stores. Avoid sugar and use only healthy sugars that are found in the organic vegies and fruits plus xylitol or agavae instead of artificial sweeteners that have chemicals. Juices are too concentrated for a lot of people, especially diabetics. Don't forget about exercise, fresh air and meditation to balance your system, stop bad habits like smoking. There are a lot of programs that can help you stop. All the above plus needed supplements and herbs to support weaknesses from years of bad diet will help you on the road to a healthy immune system. If needed, alternative medical practitioners can guide you in a program that is especially for you to cleanse your body of bad toxins that have been built up for years.. For most health issues, no surguries, drugs will be needed.
I have had a lot of health issues, osteo-arthritis, border line diabetes, hepatitis A, chronic colon problems, early colon cancer and an emergency gangerous appendectomy. I had a lot of flu and severe colds in my earlier years, but now almost non-existent. Do take a small amount of medication for my thyroid. I have had only 1 surgery in my 80 years. Pharmaceutical drugs are almost out of the picture because of my allergic reaction to most of them.
IMPORTANT! Become proactive in your health care. Take responsibility instead of using short-term band aids like drugs which does nothing for your immune system.
These expenditures should send an alarm about the nation's food supply as well as the cunningly priced pharmaceuticals. Both the agricultural and pharmaceutical corporations have been publicly subsidized for decades and continue to pay substantial dividends to their stockholders and executive salaries.
Diabetes is a form of malnutrition which indicates poverty and ignorance both of which are contrived by the corporate elite, the banks and their lackey politicians. If you want to decrease this $116 Billion figure adjust your balance sheets and stop advertising on Fox News. If you want to increase it continue your corrupt pillaging of the treasury and inhumane juggernaut.
The dramatic increase in diabetes is linked to the equally dramatic increase in obesity. Key contributors to obesity are the many types of cheap, unhealthy food Americans consume every day. Many of these unhealthy foods rely upon the availability of cheap, government subsidized corn. Because of their low cost, people consume them in large quantities. Some examples are:
- High fructose corn syrup found in many foods such as soda drinks
- Corn-fed cattle turned into cheap hamburger meat
So government subsidized corn produces cheap, unhealthy food...which increases obesity....which increases diabetes....which increases health care costs.
So one way to cut health care costs is to cut corn subsidies.
Processed food here in America, with its high content of bad fat, hydrogenated oils, salt, corn sweeteners including high-fructose syrup, and poorly fed cattle and other meat producing animals, is devastating to our health and our healthcare costs. And in producing these processed foods, we are dramatically adding to climate change considering the high amount of energy it takes to produce this food -- more calories than it provides. Our bodies and our environment are in danger.
We are already paying for the high cost of health care through additional healthcare fees, decreased pay, food subsidies, and processed foods bad for our health.
Let's turn to a new healthcare system, with more transparency as to the real and current cost of our healthcare and our health. Let's insist on better, cleaner food for healthier lives and a more economically sustainable system.
I have always wondered at the response and attitude of most Americans when it comes to medical health in the USA. They claim they do not want 'socialized medicine' whatever that may mean. But as has been very clearly stated in one of the comments posted here, there are at least 20 industrialized countries that have better health care systems than the USA. Additionally, they are far older than the USA in terms of experimentation. They must have tried alot of alternatives BEFORE settling for what they now have. It is simply counterproductive to try and re-invent the proverbial wheel. JUST USE IT AMERICA!!!!!!!!!!!!! Choose one of these existing systems, tweak it just a little if you must take credit for 'originality' and go ahead and ensure EVERY American has access to affordable health care. Please! Please! Please! Same quality as members of Congress have! Cut out all the arrogance of ignorance!

It seems like there should be more money spent on Diabetes prevention.
